About Our Challenge

We live in urban Havelock North, Hawkes Bay, New Zealand. We have a large garden with fruit trees, vegetable gardens and chickens. The challenge I have set is to live off our backyard for four months.

These are the rules I will live by for the next four months.

-only eat produce grown from my garden

-barter for items I can’t grow with produce from my garden

-foraging is allowed

-allow our family one night out each fortnight to eat out, or eat at friends.

Can we do it? Can I get my three young boys and lolly and chocolate loving husband to come along for the ride?

Let me introduce my family or as I like to call them my gaggle of boys!

  1. Is that the look Chris gave you when you told him he was living off the land for 4 months?!!!!I sense his take on 'foraging', and yours, may be quite different!

  2. Yes Countess, I fear that there may be a slight difference of interpretation. Time will tell. Watch this space.

  3. I think its a great challenge, and I've seen your blog well into the event. I did one a few years back when everything on the table all day christmas day have to be grown here or bartered for. The biggest challenge was the ham but then I found a school teacher stuck for a baby sitter for the while of december so I minded her child at my place in return for a ham and some cream and sugar.
